UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference Pushed Back to August 2026

Conference Delayed by COVID-19 Pandemic

States Parties to Discuss Treaty Implementation, Victim Assistance, and Environmental Impact

The Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which was scheduled to take place in 2025, has been postponed to August 2026. The decision was made due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The NPT is a multilateral treaty that aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. It has three main pillars: nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. States parties meet every five years at a Review Conference (RevCon) to assess the implementation of the treaty.

At the forthcoming NPT PrepCom, States parties will discuss a range of issues, including:

  • The progress made in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation
  • The challenges to the NPT
  • The future of the treaty

The PrepCom will also consider proposals for new initiatives, such as discussions on victim assistance and environmental remediation.

The NPT is a vital instrument for maintaining international peace and security. The Review Conference is an opportunity for States parties to assess the implementation of the treaty and to make recommendations for its future. The postponement of the conference to 2026 will give States parties more time to prepare for these important discussions.
